Jet13 Records is proud to present a limited
edition 7" single 666 Yeah from the
punk legend UK SUBS.
Celebrating the 30 years of punk together with continuing
their constant touring, playing to the new generations of
nations' disaffected punk youth (who were perhaps first SUB
verted aged 5 when watching Charlie and co. appearing on the
British TV show, Top of The Pops!).
The songs were recorded on 06.06.2006 with the current UK
line-up Charlie Harper, Brian Barnes, Jamie Oliver and Jet.
You can hear a short but definitely strong Charlie Harper's
blues influenced harmonica solo on side A "666 Yeah",
alongside 1min 34secs fast, furious and loud "Straighten
Out" on side B which shows the band is still going strong.
An amazing 200+ gigs a year, and after the worldwide touring
for 3 decades, they maintain and pioneer the true spirit of
punk rock, without compromising and watering down that affected
so many of their contemporaries.
Pressed on red transparent wax and handnumbered to 1000 copies.
A must have item for your record collection!

He may be in his sixties but the grandfather of punk, Charlie
Harper, and his Subs still know how to throw a punk rock party!
While the lead track in an MC5 influenced slice of blues punk,
b-side 'Straighten Out' rocks just like The Subs did back
in the '70s. This kicks the shit out of most things claiming
to be punk these days.

London based punk legends the UK Subs crank up the evil on
this transparent (blood?) red 7h single, which was recorded
on that most unholy of dates 06.06.06.
After more than thirty years of worldwide touring (200+ gigs
a year!), UK Subs frontman Charlie Harper operates a revolving
door line-up to keep things fresh, and an endless stream of
musicians have come and gone since the days when the Subs
recorded tracks such as eStrangleholdf and eDown on The Farmf(the
latter famously covered by Guns nf Roses on their eSpaghetti
Incidentf album ? and hey, perhaps these days Axl is attempting
to emulate Harper with his approach to line-up changes).
This incarnation of the UK Subs includes Japanese guitarist
Jet, previously with Sonic Boom Boys and The Parkinsons, who
also happens to be head honcho of Jet 13 records, the label
behind this disk. Although not a great departure from the
eclassicf UK Subs style, Jetsf guitar playing creates a slightly
more epunk nf rollf sound, suggesting that this could also
appeal to a slightly broader audience than previous offerings.
The artwork too is a bit of a change for the Subs, featuring
a rock nf roll looking red devil and ace of spades motif as
opposed to the Xerox anarchist stylings of old. The whole
package is great quality, including nice glossy cardboard
sleeve (featuring the above mentioned artwork), and also an
inner sleeve to protect the rockinf red vinyl disk.
So stick this slab of wax on the turntable and you get a pounding
rocker of an A-side featuring a quick harmonica solo from
Charlie (who maintains that punk is a form of blues music),
then flip this sucker over for a quick one-minute-and-thirty-four-second
blast of fast and furious uncompromising punk rock that will
scorch the grease from your ears.
This is one of the best singles Ifve heard from UK Subs, who
are one of the greatest bands to have emerged from the British
punk boom of the late 1970s/early 1980s, and continue to be
a great band to this day, both on stage, and also in the studio
based on this evidence.

Good Old Charlie Abstriche machen. Aufgenommen wurden beide
Stücke am 06.06.2006 im aktuellen U.K.-Line-up: Charlie
Harper, Brian Barnes, Jamie Oliver und Jet.

Web
For a detailed overview of this legendary British Punk band,
please visit their website uksubs.com. For our purposes, let's
remember that the band centered around mainstay Charlie Harper
first got its name somewhere in 1977, and that they've been
releasing albums (both studio and live) on quite a regular
basis over the last 30 years. The millenium has however seemed
to slow down the band somewhat. Plenty of re-issues (oft under
new album titles and alternate cover art), but the last studio
album dates back to 2002's Universal (released through Captain
Oi! ). It was followed by the live Staffordshire Ball in 2003
(on Invisible Hands Music ), but as far as I can gather, that
was the last. The band has however continued to stay active
at the live front throughout, still doin' some 200 gigs per
year.
This new and limited edition 7" vinyl single (only 1000
handnumbered copies on transparent red vinyl) should be the
perfect advertisement for a new full-length (at least I hope
so), and the two short songs (lasting only 204 seconds together)
are the best evidence of the fact that even after 30 years,
Charlie stays true to the real spirit of Punk Rock, both lyrically
and musically! The title song gets its nomenclature from the
single having been recorded on the 6 th of June last year
(06/06/06), with a line-up of Charlie (vocals and some harmonica
in the title song), Jet (guitar), Brian Barnes (bass), and
Jamie Oliver (obviously not the popular cook by the name,
on drums).
A line-up which will be slightly different if you happen to
catch 'em on tour during February (they're at the Lintfabriek
on the 16 th ), as Brian and Jet have been exchanged for Nicky
& Alvin (not sure if that's respectively). No matter what,
and with whatever band backed him up, Charlie has always been
the perfect host for a nice evening of Punk Rockin', the oldfashioned
way!

Who are these young whippersnappers that are grinding out
some prime rock and roll? It the fuckinf Subs maaaaaan. No
way maaaaaan. It bloody well is as well. The UK Subs, with
666Yeah, manage to easily hit a target between the Stooges
and MC5, while still clinging to their UK punk credentials
with ease. This is quite simply the dogs bollocks. If this
is the direction the UK Subs are heading in then Ifm hitching
a ride on their wagon. Itfs fresh, raw and the polar opposite
from the jaded and tired pish that a lot of their peers are
trundling out. Flip it over and we get a more traditional
Subs song, but even Straighten Out sounds like it has Charlie
with one hand on the mike and the other jammed into the mains
socket. This has blown me away. Whatever Charlie and the rest
of the guys are on. I want some. |
